When the pandemic forced schools to close, school districts and states scrambled to keep a nutritional safety net working for vulnerable students. Millions of US students rely on school meals and summer feeding programs to get food each day. In this podcast, Janet Poppendieck, Senior Faculty Fellow, CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute, Professor Emerita, Hunter College, and author of Free For All: Fixing School Food in America (University of California Press, 2010), talks about the changes in the school food system in the US as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The podcast is part of the Duke University’s World Food Policy Center podcasts “The Leading Voices in Food” and their series focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our food system.
